Company Coming

Flashback Friday is hosted by Camille.  (Click on the badge to visit her blog, which is the home of Flashback Friday.)  I was introduced to this delightful meme and blog hop by Rosey.  Why don’t you consider joining in the fun?

I was very distracted last week and failed to participate.  Sorry about that Camille and Rosey.  I’m going to try to do better, because this is a very fun meme.

We’ve got company coming this weekend.  Our son, Scott, is going to spend a week or so with us.  Sylvia and I are looking forward to being with him.

Mason, Michigan, 1969 — Scott’s first birthday.

As 1973 began, Scott was enrolled in Kinder in San José, Costa Rica.  That fall he started Kindergarten in Quito, Ecuador, and his mother was his teacher.  (That was quite a challenge, but that’s a story for another day. 🙄 )

Speaking of education, Scott, attended classes in three different schools in Michigan after we returned from Ecuador.  Later, when we moved to Connecticut, he finished middle school in the town where we lived and after that High School in an adjacent town.  While in Mississippi with the USAF, he earned a couple of degrees.

I think he takes more pleasure in the various martial arts black belts that he has been awarded.  An activity that he continues to be very active in as an instructor.

Busy as . . .

The Observer

This is one of Nellie’s favorite spots.  Sitting on a chair in front of an open window.  It seems that from this vantage point there is always something interesting to watch.  Maybe I should move my recliner?

Our kitty is increasingly more comfortable with us and around us.  She doesn’t spend much time with me, but she will approach me even when I’m standing.  Her comfort level with Sylvia is all together different.  As soon as Sylvia settles into her recliner, Nellie will appear and hop up on her lap and relaxes for a long visit.

If she hops on my lap, I give her a kitty treat.  She devours the treat and then leaves me.

Computer Progress

As a follow-up to yesterday’s post.  Sylvia’s computer now holds her restored e-mail inbox and contact info.  I can “see” her computer from mine, but I’ve not been able to install the laser printer [connected to her computer] as a shared printer on mine.  It’s a driver issue.  I think I know how to fix it, but it will have to wait for a while.

At least Sylvia has a fully operational computer.  And the new one is fast–very fast.  Can you say, happy camper?  That’s what she is.

Looks like this is the day for yard work.  It will feel good to get away from these computers and get some fresh air and sunshine.

New Computers

Short version: The transition is a pain.

Long version: Sylvia’s new computer has returned, having been repaired.  I have to move her address book and e-mail messages from the old to the new.  I’ve always had a hard time with this task, and Microsoft Office help is not very helpful.  Oh well!

Also, The default network name has changed so I’ve got to change that so that we can share network resources.  The laser printer is on a USB port on her computer.  My computer doesn’t see it.  I know what to do, but I have to find out how to do it Windows 7.

At this point I’m about to go off on a rant.  Before that happens, let me wish you a good day, sign off and get to work.

Tastes Like Maple . . .

Monday morning I looked out the window and saw this little guy eating his breakfast.

Yum! Fresh maple seeds

As he reached for another helping, something must have caught his attention.  He turned and stretched up to better see down the lawn.

Looking, but still chewing

There was no threat just an unusual noise from the neighbor’s farm.  No threat?  No problem!  Time to continue the task at hand.

“I just can’t get enough of these.”

I watched a bit longer, but then left to go about my business.

Today

We have company coming today.  Brother-in-law, Rick with my sisters Clara and Maggie are coming for a visit.  Rick starts a new job on Monday, so he has a little bit of free time today.  We do this from time to time, and I always look forward to it.

Also, FedEx tracking indicates that Sylvia’s new computer is on the delivery truck and should arrive here later today.  This is the unit that she used for two days before it died.  I had bought it from a reseller on Amazon.com.  When I checked warranty status online before sending the computer to the manufacturer for repair or replacement, I discovered that six weeks remained of the one year warranty.  Do you think I’ll purchase from that source again?  Ever?  That’s right.  No way!

I need to harvest some rhubarb for Sylvia.  I think there’s some rhubarb crisp on our menu for today. :food:

On the Lawn

Last week, as I was mowing the lawn, I noticed a killdeer.  She would seem to pop-up in front of me and run away.  Not too fast, but fast enough to stay in front of the tractor.

I began to scan the area for her nest.  It has to be close and she was trying to lure me away from it.  Eventually I saw the little next with three eggs in it.

The killdeer sits on her nest

As you can see in the first picture, I didn’t mow anywhere near the nest.  You can see the bird can’t you?

A closer shot of the killdeer

This morning, I saw no sign of activity or even killdeer presence in the vicinity of the nest.  Curiosity controlled as I walked to the nesting site.  With camera in hand and eyes scanning my surrounds I cautiously approached.  And there in the middle of the un-mown circle I saw . . . nothing but grass.

Four days earlier, on Thursday, there had been a small simple nest with three eggs.  A tuft of dead, dry grass, which lay at one edge of the circle may have part of that nest.  So did the babies hatch?  And did the parents lead them away?  Or did a raccoon or skunk find and despoil the cache of eggs?  I don’t expect to ever know.

Other Matters

Sylvia should be returning home in a couple of hours.  She has been with her father for the last week.  Nellie and I will be glad to see her.

Last Wednesday’s Wordless post disappeared from my blog.  Evidently the hosting company had to restore data and that got lost in the process.  I may try to replace it, but may not.  It wasn’t a big deal.
