Friday was a busy day for Sylvia and me. We had brought Lily home the previous afternoon and after looking around for a while, she had gone into hiding. She was nowhere to be seen on Friday morning. There was evidence that at night she had come out of hiding to eat, use the facility and to play.
After breakfast, our first stop was to see the podiatrist. There we had our pre-surgery consultation, picked up a couple of prescriptions and got fitted with a “boot.”
Doctor Dave, after explaining that liability laws and such require that he cover some things with us. He then went over the potential risks, which included “You could die, but it’s not likely. Do you want to go ahead with the procedure.” I did and I do.
The doctor explained that he would shave the outside of the bunion on my right foot. That means remove excess material. Then he would cut the bone and move the joint at the base of the big toe inward toward the center of the foot. This he would secure with screws. Finally he’d cut the first bone in the toe, removing a small pie-shaped wedge to straighten the big toe. This would then also be secured with screws.
On the way home I left a prescription for a pain killer at the pharmacy. After lunch, we visited a medical supply business where we got a pair of crutches. While I was doing that, Sylvia picked up some cat food for Lily–the kind she had at the shelter.
Then it was back to the pharmacy to pick up the prescription. While I was doing that, Sylvia made a stop at the library. It was late afternoon by the time we returned home and the roads were getting bad.
Everything should be set for Wednesday. It’s an out-patient procedure, so I’ll be back home that night. Unless one of those really bad things that Doctor Dave warned about happens. But as he said, “That’s unlikely.”
Some of you are wondering about Lily. I’m happy to report that Saturday evening she came out of hiding. I’ll tell you more about it and share pictures tomorrow.

I know of a friend that had this done and she said it was the worse thing she ever went through. I hope that you are going to be okay and that you like the results when it is done. I like you cute sweet cat Lily! I am glad she came out of hiding! I will be praying for you to get healed real fast!

I had the surgery done yesterday (Wednesday). I’m experiencing pain, but not nothing that I can’t bear.
Lily wasn’t happy here and has returned to the shelter. We felt bad about that. We have some experience with the breed and that was very positive. Perhaps she misses the 58 other cats that she was living with before she went to the shelter. (Or at least some of them. 😀 )
It sounds much worse than it is. Seriously. My SIL had it done on one foot, let that heal and went to have the other done a few months later. You will be surprised at how fast you will heal. And just keep in mind how better you will feel in the long run.
I do not like that Doctor Dave. All surgeries have risks and there are ways to explain them without saying “you may die.” I think that is sort of jerky on his part. Not very sensitive, is he?
Sending love and prayers for an easy surgery and a fast recovery. I was able to walk after surgery–not for long, but I didn’t need crutches. I think as long as you follow the directions, you will be good. Just keep it up.

Dr Dave tells me that I’ll heal fast too. It’s that promise of feeling better in the long run that keeps me motivated. :up: What Dr Dave said would sound much better to you if you had heard it in context. We had been quipping some before that and I felt we were relating well to each other, recognizing that this situation didn’t mark the end of the world. I did not perceive his comment as being insensitive–at least to me it wasn’t. He watched me carefully and monitored my reaction to each word and phrase. The growing grin on my face gave him permission to say what he did. I’ve probably made it sound worse that it really was. Ask Sylvia, she was there.

If I survive,I should be walking in about three weeks. 😉It has been over 30 years since I could sleep on my back with a sheet over my toes. That will be nice to sleep that way again. :zz:

Hi publicist! I’m thinking more about the final result, and that is worth a little more discomfort now. (I have foot pain every day.)
We are happy with Lily. She’s such a pretty girl and with a sweet disposition. I don’t suppose it’s easy for her going from a house with 59 cats to the shelter and now being an only kitty living with the old folks. She won’t lack for love. 8)
I’ve know others who had this done. Sounds awful, but I think the end result is good.
I dread the recovery. And I am so counting the end result to be good. It would be nice to be able to go out and enjoy a long walk. Perhaps not like one of your hikes, but a nice walk. :frolic:
I had no idea it was such a detailed, intense thing to have such a surgery (I certainly didn’t know they cut a bone!). I’m guessing that to seek out the removal, it must have been giving you a pretty good hassle. Pretty soon your feet will be back to normal, so that must be exciting! Nothing to make us appreciate our feet (or anything else) like having something go wrong w/them.

Thanks for the good wishes Rosey! I sure appreciate them. The podiatrist (Dr Dave) will be cutting two bones in that foot. He says walking around okay in three months back to normal in a year. Fair enough. I’m ready. 😀
Ouch Chuck that sounds tender! Walter is on his way home to see the DR. about surgery on two hernias. One is in pretty bad shape. We will keep you in our prayers.

I’d guess that Walter’s situation is serious. Sure sound like that to me. We keep you folks in our prayers. :angelic:
