I’ve not been able to spend much time here in the office lately. That’s not apt to change a lot in the next few weeks.
I was looking through some old family photos when I came across this one of me and my Uncle Jerry. Jerry is an older, half-brother of my mother.
Another of my mother’s brothers also served in WWII. Hence the two stars in the flag in my grandparent’s front window.
My mother had two had two older half-brothers. Jerry, with whom she shared a father, and Edward, with whom she shared a mother. She also had two younger [full] brothers and a younger sister.
I always used to look to family gatherings. They meant a chance to hang with cousins and grandma used to make real mincemeat pie. I loved that. It was actually made with meat.
Have you ever tried that kind of mincemeat?
This is a great Pic of Uncle Jerry. Is that you with him? I can still taste Grandmas mincemeat pie. Luckily she shared the receipe with my Mother & she always made Dad and I one for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Still kicking myself for not getting the receipe. Thanks for sharing this pic and the wonderful memory of “mincemeat pie”
Yes, that cute little guy with our Uncle Jerry was really me. 😯
Perhaps my dad didn’t care for her mincemeat pie. I don’t recall Mom baking them, although she baked fruit pies once or twice a week. :food:
These days, my favorite is rhubarb pie, but only if Sylvia is making it. Right now, I’m wishing I had a slice to go with my morning coffee. A slice of cheddar on the side would make it perfect! 😀
Green tomato mincemeat was mostly made by my mother, grandmother and great grandmother. My sisters and I also made a batch one time, but it wasn’t as good as theirs. I remember seeing my great great grandmother when I was eight years old. There was six generations that were twenty years apart, and most lived into their nineties. My mother will be ninety-seven in April. She still does crossword puzzles once in a while. She lives with my sister in northern CA.
Hope your foot continues to improve.
Hi Bob,
When recipes are shared, all of the secrets are not necessarily passed along. Sylvia discovered that when it came to making crust for fruit pies. Eventually, she learned the secrets and surpassed her teachers in the fruit pie creation category. :smart:
You were just adorable! I’ve had real mincemeat, but I actually prefer my mother’s green tomato mincemeat.
Everyone to their own taste. I believe that holds true for “adorable” :surrender: and mincemeat. :food:
I have. Mother used to make the mincemeat and the pie! Modern imitations are such a disappointment. :food:
Then you are truly blessed. Your are 100% correct that the modern products are mere imitations–and poor ones at that.
Ooooo, I remember that pie! :food: I loved it, too. I’ve had mincemeat pie made by others and I didn’t like it at all. I was probably comparing it to Grandma’s.
I love this pic of you and Uncle Jerry.
Grandma’s mincemeat was the best. Sylvia’s step-g’ma did okay, and she would make it special for me sometimes. Sure loved her for that!
The pic is one of my favorites.
Nope. Never had mincemeat pie–with or without meat. It doesn’t sound good to me.
That is a cool picture! And you are so adorable! 🙂
I hope you are starting to feel better. How are things coming along? Has Nellie warmed up to you and Nascar watching yet?
Mincemeat wouldn’t suit a modern palate. I’m sure that’s a big part of why it is on the menu these days.
Thanks . . . I think. Adorable is good, isn’t it?
Feeling a bit better, but getting very tired of sitting around. When I try to move then the foot swells and the pain level increases. 🙁
Nellie actually hopped up onto my lap last night for the first time. So we’re making progress. NASCAR season just starting, so we’ve got lots of time to get into that. She did pretty well with the TV as we watched The Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Jason Bourne trilogy too. She’s going to be a perfect fit. Thanks for asking.
Odd that at my age I’ve never even seen one (a mincemeat pie). I like the picture of you and your uncle, little cute baby. 8)
Is that an Infantry cord on your uncle’s shoulder? My son has one. It scares me and makes me proud all at the same time.
Perhaps not strange that you are not acquainted with mincemeat. It dates back to a time before modern refrigeration (or the widespread use thereof) when meat was preserved by canning.
It has been years since I’ve had any. And even longer since I had it with real meat.
