Marking Time

The title of this post is a good description of my life in recent days.  Mark time means to wait.  In military terms, it means march in place without making forward progress.  Yes, that describes it. :surrender:

I’m not able to spend much time here at the computer.  That means fewer posts for you and fewer comments on the posts of my blogger buds.

My sister, Maggie, sent me an e-mail asking about Nellie.  She also asked why I hadn’t posted about her lately.

The answer to Maggie’s queries is that Nellie is still avoiding me most of the time.  She has grown close to Sylvia and spends time on her lap a few times a day.  Once in a while, she will visit me in the evening.  She hops into my lap and I give her a kitty treat or two.  Soon after she is gone.

Wednesday evening, my neighbor and friend, Bud, dropped in for a visit.  While we were chatting, Nellie came into the room.  She spent a lot of time looking at Bud.  Bud talked with her.  Then he moved his closed hand up and down a couple of time on the arm of the recliner in which he was sitting.  Nellie came closer to investigate.  Soon she was on Bud’s lap.  It took a few days before she did that with me.  Go figure.

Yesterday, Sylvia flew to Florida where she will visit with family for 9 days.  Perhaps Nellie and I can bond a bit during that time.  I’m hoping so.

Meanwhile, I can see the appearance of progress in my foot.  The color is nearly normal and the base of the big toe does not hurt when I touch that area.  Still pain continues and the foot is swollen so that I can’t yet wear my loosest tennis shoe. 🙁

The good news is that spring is coming.  I can see the signs of its impending arrival.  I hear the sounds of geese and sandhill cranes as they fly overhead.  At least one turkey buzzard has come back.

How I react to all of this is my choice.  That choice will be to remain optimistic and be happy.  I do get to choose that.

About Chuck

I am retired after a career in electronics and in publishing. Today, my wife of 50+ years, Sylvia, and I live in a house on a hill beside a dirt road in rural west Michigan. We enjoy living in this country environment where livestock and wild life out number the human population.

  1. Chuck, my doctor had me buy a shoe that was a size or two larger after my surgery. I bought two matching pairs at Walmart (they were cheap there) and one was my regular size to wear on my one foot and I used the larger size on my surgical foot. This helped get around, get used to wearing a shoe, AND I felt somewhat normal when I went out–Nobody noticed the difference in shoe sizes.

That darn cat! Mine do the SAME thing–I beg and plead for them to sit on my lap…to no avail. I have to wait for them to decide what time is best for THEIR schedule…and even then…it is never on my lap. Ever. Grace will sit on the arm of the couch next to me…but I’m not allowed to pet her or she will get down. Hobbes will lay on the corner of the bed when I’m reading…but again…will move if I touch him.

    sigh.

You and I have what I like to call “No pet” pets. Ugh.

I think you can work on being friends when Sylvia is gone. It helps your relationship tremendously when you are the person feeding her each day. You gotta boot Sylvia from that job when she comes back from Florida.

Hope you are feeling better soon, my friend. I miss ya!

    • Thanks for the shoe suggestion Lin. That’s a great idea. This morning I went to Walmart and bought two pair of athletic shoes. 😀 I can use the other half of the pair when my left foot is done.

This is the fifth day (Monday) since Sylvia left. Nellie hasn’t changed her attitude and actions much. It’s going to be okay. She is what she is. Okay, it makes me appreciate and miss Midnight even more. 🙁

    • Today, I was able to get that shoe on. I removed the orthotic insert, which left enough room to slip my foot in. I was concerned about getting to church tomorrow, but I should be okay. 😀

    • Good point. I’m willing to live with that. I’d just like to see her lose her fear of me.

Still having pain, but it’s lower today. I really want to drop the heavy-duty pain killer. It has nasty side effects. 🙁

  2. Of course you’re right, we do get to choose our attitude, and why wouldn’t we make it a happy one? I love that you wrote that ending. 🙂

My husband will be going off next year (to another country!) without me. Our first time apart like that, and I think I’m going to miss him! We’d planned the vacation/event together but I recently remembered it’s right during a very big event for my daughter, so her, I and the little one will be passing. That being said, the wives of the other guys who were going have opted out too (since they all live there or have been before) so it will be a boys trip!!! A boys trip at 49 yrs old. That doesn’t happen often, does it? So I’m excited for hubby about that, and I know they’ll have a lot of fun (MSU dorm buddies they all are!). 😯

    • Life is easier when one realizes that you can’t control your circumstances, but you can control your reaction to them.

Sorry you’ll miss the trip. The guys will probably enjoy themselves. It does sound like fun. 8)

      • You’re so right…about both.

And we saw geese today in the backyard and it totally made me think of you mentioning them. Woo hoo, Spring really is coming!!

  3. Chuck- an older hiker friend of mine had toe surgery and it was 9 months before he was getting around normally. I hate to tell you that, but the good part is that he did eventually get back, even to hiking. Feet just don’t like being messed with. I hope Nellie cuddles a bit while your best friend is gone visiting.

    • Perhaps it’s taking longer because of age or lack of activity. The latter being related to the bunions on my feet.

I’m thinking that Nellie will never be a cuddly kitty. I’m just hoping that she will stop being afraid of me.
