Meet Buddy

It was about 2 weeks ago when we first saw him.  He was on the ceiling.  Out of reach.  The next day he was on a window.  Behind the Venetian blinds.  That happened several more times.

A week later, Sylvia said, “If you are going to hang around with us I’ll have to give you a name.  I’ll call you Buddy.”  That’s how it began.

Is it possible to grow fond of a flying insect with a stinger?  I think that’s what’s happening here.  Wouldn’t you find a spot in your heart for such a handsome fellow as Buddy?

Buddy’s not a cat or a cute little puppy.  He’s not the kind of guy with which you want to cuddle.  Still he’s interesting to watch.  And he seems to be a very good listener when I talk to him.

Still the question remains.  Does a hornet make a good pet?

  1. Having been stung by a bumble bee, I wouldn’t be too thrilled to have a wasp or a hornet nearby. However, I know that stinging insects can be friends too….like honey bees. My father raised bees for honey . When the bees needed a new hive, he was able to pick up gobs of bees in his bare hands and start them in a new hive. I thought that was pretty neat !

  2. I would find it challenging to feel really excited about a greeting from Buddy. Sorry. That said, I would not smash him (probably), but would try to get him in a jar and relocated.

    • The whole point is that after two-weeks we don’t want to smash him. Normally, that is exactly what we would do. He’s not bother us and so we are tolerant. I’ll have an update a bit later.

Beautiful day. Got outside and rolled rough parts of the lawn and mowed the south lawn. I’m tired and a bit sore, but hoping to sleep well tonight.

  3. Not my idea of a great pet, but there are plenty of opportunities to have one at our place. We sprayed four wasps nests this week on the peaks of our roof. Just about every condo in our complex has more than one already. I’m not sure what makes our space so attractive to them.

    • They love to get behind our shutters. Later this year we’ll be replacing windows, so they will face eviction with extreme prejudice. They also love the to get in the protection of the garage door opening.
