Recently, my friend, Lin, asked me to post pix of my dynamic manger scene display. I promised to do that. It seems only fair as many of her friends wait eagerly to see her Christmas display and where will the pope and the hooker be this year.
Using figures that Sylvia’s mother made for us, I set up the scene as it might have been and follow the story as it may have developed.
This year, the story begins with the engaged couple, Joseph and Mary at home. This was before the Roman the census that required men to return to their ancestral homes to register for that census.
Thus we see the pair before their journey.
The contented cow awaits at the manger, which will become the focus of the story.
Subsequent posts will follow Joseph and Mary on their journey.

No train set up here yet…I have my other foot surgery tomorrow. But, stay tuned as the real tree and the train will be in action on the 16th! I have to go to the train website now and see if I can find any new additions!

That’s a great idea…now you can keep adding to it !! In the 70’s I made the complete set for the manger scene. Every Christmas we have displayed it on a large antique oak table. Still packed away upstairs this year but still time to get it down !!!!
Sylvia’s mom made these in the 80s. Yes, plenty of time. Our’s stays up until after January 6 (Epiphany or 3 Kings Day).
I like this idea- I know you’ve told me about it before. It would be a great idea with kids and a set of figurines that could take being handled a lot.
I’ll probably say more about it later, but I’m thinking action figures so that poses can change as the scene unfolds. These ceramic figures already have chips, so it’s “handle with care.”
Love this! Would not have thought to display Mary and Joseph before their journey.
This is, in fact, the first year that I’ve chosen to go back that far. Next year, I may start with Mary and Gabriel.
