Lily Speaks

This was written by Lily.  She asked me to post this for her.

“You’ve been so kind, but . . .

Searching, searching, searching and calling.

“I finally got out of the old folks’ home.  That place was boring, boring, boring.  Yes they were nice to me.  They gave me good food and water, clean litter and lots and lots of skritches and head rubs (oohh I love those).  Still I wasn’t happy.  I tried to tell them, but they don’t speak kitty very well.

“That poor old man just didn’t get it at all.  Finally the lady began to understand what I was trying to tell them.  I saw her pick up the phone in the office and call the shelter.  She asked a lot of questions of the woman that runs that place.  The lady talked to the old man and they got real quiet.  I heard a sigh and then . . . to my relief . . . he said, “Okay.”

“My request had finally been understood and granted.  They took me back to the shelter.  As soon as I was out of the box, I ran to greet the other girls and then settled into a nice little nest all set for me!

“I didn’t want to break the old folks’ heart, so I sent them back home with Nellie.  Nellie came from a quiet house, and that’s what she needs.  NOT ME!  Boy, is she going to find things quiet and boring.  She tells me that that’s what she needs.  And she’s going to get it.  So, ‘Goodbye Old Man and Nice Lady.  No hard feelings.  You’re nice, but not for me.  I hope Nellie is happy with you.  I need more action in my life.’ ”

About Chuck

I am retired after a career in electronics and in publishing. Today, my wife of 50+ years, Sylvia, and I live in a house on a hill beside a dirt road in rural west Michigan. We enjoy living in this country environment where livestock and wild life out number the human population.

    • Thanks Doreen. We were a bit sad that Lily wasn’t happy here. However, Nellie should be a better fit. And that will be best for everyone. :cheer:

  1. Oh my you guys don’t feel bad. We had to do the same thing once with a dog. She just never could adjust and was thrilled when she got back to the shelter. I bet Lily is happy and glad to be back too.

Hi Nellie! I am so glad to meet you! I have three cats and one dog and we are getting a German Shepherd soon to protect our ducks and geese outside. We all love cats here!

Oh my you are very pretty and I am looking forward to getting to know you very very much! 🙂

    • Hey Jackie,

I’m just glad that Sylvia was sensitive enough to pick up on what was happening with Lily. I hadn’t noticed the “signs” and could never have made the call to the shelter, which needed to be done.

We’ll have more on Nellie as she begins to open up to us and to her new surroundings.

  2. Well, it was good that you figured out what she needed. Now the shelter can put that in their notes and make sure that she is adopted into a house with other kitties. That’s important information to make sure she isn’t returned again. She is pretty and friendly enough, she will find the right home.

Sooooo, welcome Nellie! I hope everyone finds this a better fit! 🙂

    • The lady that runs the shelter was super good about everything. Any doubts quickly disappeared when Lily hopped out of the box and made herself completely at home–immediately.

Nellie needs a quiet home, and that’s what she’ll find. She was quicker than Lily to come out of hiding, but she’s still very shy. 😐

  3. That shelter has a lot of lie’s. Hope the old man has a easy recovery and Nellie keeps him enertained.

    • Thanks Bruce! This week the shelter has 28 cats available for adoption. Last week, the number was 14. Lily should go quickly. I’ll check the shelter Website to see.

It’s now the day after surgery and while I have pain, it’s tolerable–especially with the meds that Dr Dave prescribed.

  4. Aw! 🙁 I liked Lily, real cute. And I admit that I am kinda biased toward the Siamese strain. 🙂 Nellie seems so sweet. She looks a lot plumper, too. Hope you don’t get squished by such a large lap cat!!!!

God bless you and keep you with your surgery, Chuck. We are praying for your speedy recovery.

    • I realized shortly after we brought Lily home that there was a Livvy – Lily connex. We have some experience with Siamese, and really liked the one we knew well.

At six years old, Nellie is pretty much full size. The shelter says she loves lap time, and that’s what I like too. She is a bit larger than Lily, but that should be no problem.

Recovery underway. Ice packs and meds helped yesterday, and I expect they will again today. Thanks loads for the prayers. :angelic:

  5. Well Lily went on vacation and now she can tell her kitty buddies about it. 🙂

Nellie looks just a bit older, do you know if she is?

We had a stray kitten come and sit under our boat trailer once…it took me FOREVER to coax it out, we’re talking days….but I finally did. She stayed around for about a week after that and left. All that hard work for nothing, but she must have had somewhere else she really wanted to go.

    • It came as a surprise to me, but Lily is about 7 y. o. and Nellie is 6. The papers even have a birthday for Nellie, so we can observe that and Gotcha Day (The day we brought her home).

We had a beautiful Siamese show up at our door at the start of winter about 45 years ago. She stayed with us, and played with the dog, an English Cocker Spaniel and our two boys. When spring came, she left. We missed her and her crazy antics–especially with the dog.

      • Wow, I was waaaaaay off. I thought Lily was a young one, from the pics. They’re both beautiful cats.

You’re recuperating from surgery now, right? If so, wishing you a speedy, easy one!

        • It’s the Siamese showing in Lily. They trend toward slender. However, Lily is underweight and should put on a few pounds. Don’t you wish someone would say that about you? :frolic: I do.

Yes, I’m recuperating now. That process will take a bit of time with all of the work the podiatrist did on the two bones at the base of the toe. Pain killers, ice packs and a wonderful wife who is trying to spoil me completely (if she hasn’t already) are all assisting. 8)

  6. I knew Chuck would never be able to make the call, but even though Lily was adjusting well to us and loved our ear scratching and petting, I could never get her to sit in my lap. And I felt so sorry for her as she constantly paced around and meowed for some other kitties. So when I asked about a trade, the lady at the Animal Shelter agreed that it would be best. It was hard to do, but we wanted the best for Lily and for Chuck as he recuperates from surgery . Nellie may be ready for some serious lap time within the week.

    • I feel bad too. I’m sure that Lily will find a good home with other feline friends. Nellie will take a while, but considering her background she should do okay.

    • Signs are that she will. She’s exploring when we’re not around. This morning she’s hiding in the basement behind a reel of wire. :beam:
