Yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon, two men from Sears delivered our new refrigerator. Sylvia and I were working in the garage when the truck arrived. It didn’t take too long for the men to remove the old box and to setup the new one. We were very happy. A week earlier, the old unit had ceased working well. It cooled, but not very well.
Last evening, I found myself thinking about how much life has changed in my lifetime. I remember when my grandparents had an old ice box. You put a block of ice into a box and it cooled food enough to keep in from spoiling. It required no electricity, which was good, because there was no electricity in their neighborhood. It seems to me that we frequently take our modern conveniences for granted.
As I thought about this last evening, I penned these lines into my notebook.
That is cute Chuck, first time to see an ice box like this though I often heard how to store foods it won't spoil in a snap but not like this stuff. It's nice! Thanks for the share Chuck!
We used icebox and refrigerator interchangeably. I don't remember an icebox, but the fridge must have come to the house not long before I did! I am told that we were the last house in the county on a paved road to get electricity, and that it happened after my mom and dad moved back to the farm. My mom was not a farm girl, and she was not happy with the lack of that utility! Actually, come to think of it, it was a gas refrigerator!
Oh how nice for you! I am sure you will be thrilled with your new erm, ice box.
I think it's a regional term as well as generational.
My how times changed.
Poem nicely delineates a generational difference in styles of living.
The picture? Nice piece of furniture! We have a White Clad icebox in our kitchen which looks just like yours, except it's finish is a lighter color.
After the previous comment, dare I admit that I still find "icebox" easier to say than is "refrigerator"?
For the longest time my hubby called the refrigerator an icebox. I suppose that's what happens when you grow up on the family farm!
Ah, the old icebox! Can you imagine how folks thought this was great?? We have an attached garage and we keep our pop and water out there. It's great in winter because it is always cold when you grab it–it's sort of our winter icebox!
