Last Friday was one of those days that make fall such a wonderful time of year. The air was chilly, but there was little to no wind and the earth is warm. It was one of those “perfect days” for mowing the lawn, and that’s what I did.
Long sleeved shirt with quilted vest, cap and gloves kept me warm. The tractor’s diesel engine droned steadily, which helps me relax. Okay, it’s not like laying in bed listening to waves breaking on a nearby beach. To me, it’s a pleasant sound.
I enjoy the warmth of the sun as its light falls down upon me. The sweet odor of newly mown grass soothes. The mind drifts to where it wants to go.
In moments like that, my thoughts frequently explore the requirements of living the simple life. What would it take to live “off the grid.” How do you cope without commercial electricity? What if you had no petrol-chemicals? How would you eat if there were no grocery stores?
The next morning (Saturday), Sylvia asked if I’d seen the lawn. I looked out the window at this:
What a difference a day makes. As you can see by the sun angle, I am not an early riser. The garden is mostly done for this year.
“I enjoy the warmth of the sun as its light falls down upon me. The sweet odor of newly mown grass soothes. The mind drifts to where it wants to go.” … perfect comment! I could smell the fresh-cut grass through your words. 🙂
Thanks, Cindi.
We had some frost here over the weekend. Missing the warmer weather already. It may not be a beach but there’s something calming and relaxing about a country lifestyle
Hi, Lyd. It’s good to hear from you again.
I agree with your observations on country living. Sylvia and I love it! :awe:
Yep I finally subscribed to your new blog via email (I was following your previous one through blogger and when you took a break did not regularly remember to look at it) so I should be a round a bit more now. Now that I’ve gotten a taste of some sort of country living (PA is much different than Baltimore) I definitely don’t want to give it up.
I hope that e-mail sub works well for you. I use Feedly to follow my favorite blogs.
I enjoy solitude and I don’t mind having to a few miles to get to a store, so country living is perfect for me.
We had a 9am soccer game to go to on Sat. morning. There was frost on the ground. Good thing you got that mowing done. 😉
We’ve got leaves galore falling on our lawn now. They’re pretty. 🙂
One of the nice aspects of living here is that I don’t have to rake leaves. The wind disperses them quite effectively. 😎
Hahaha, I was alarmed and told my husband our leaves were blowing into the neighbor’s yard. He asked me if I wanted him to go chase them. Silly husband. :haha:
We sure have had some lovely days of late. Rain today, but that’s ok.
I’d sure love a series of dry days to help my neighbors bring in the harvest. It would also firm up the lawn for the tree service crew that will be coming one of these days.
The inexorable march of time. . . (Not sure what the word means, but I like the sound of it.)
It does have a nice sound to it. Or as the agent said to Neo, “That, Mister Anderson, is the sound of inevitability.”
Frost already??! Wow. I’ve been waiting for it here, but not yet. My yard is ready, but the pond is not shut down.
Like you, I like working out in back 40 (feet). It’s good for the soul to get dirty, I think.
We had frost Saturday and Sunday. Now it’s milder temps and rain.
