Red-Winged Black Bird

These neighborhood regulars are easy to identify both on the wing and by their distinctive whirring call. They jealously guard their territory.

Red-Winged Black Bird

He breaks forth in song,
Shining black wing with red band,
On his claim stands guard.

About Chuck

I am retired after a career in electronics and in publishing. Today, my wife of 50+ years, Sylvia, and I live in a house on a hill beside a dirt road in rural west Michigan. We enjoy living in this country environment where livestock and wild life out number the human population.

  1. Did YOU take that picture????? Wow, incredible, and a beautiful bird!

    Justine 😮 )

  2. That is my favorite bird, Chuck!! How did you know?? :0 Really–they are the true sign that spring is coming and I love their call. Sigh. Aren’t they lovely? Thanks for the cool photo.

  3. We use to see those all the time in Missouri. I haven’t seen one in Maryland yet. I am to close to the city I guess. Nice Photo.

  4. Beautiful picture. Of course they insist on nesting on the ground; and woe to he who walks too near!
