Midnight Reacts to Our Absence

For the first time since we brought him into the house 21 months ago, we left Midnight home alone for more than a few hours.  Sylvia and I were gone for three days on our trip to Michigan’s upper peninsula and to the family cottage where we spent our honeymoon 50 years earlier.  Cousin Sandee loaned us the water station and feeder to take care of kitty’s needs.  We were not sure how he would react to us after being gone that long.  Being a cat, we didn’t expect a huge welcome.  In that, we weren’t disappointed.

Nevertheless, he seemed okay when we came in.  That continued while we unloaded our bags from the car.  Later he jumped up onto my lap for a heart-to-heart.

Midnight gives me “the talk”

Midnight was so upset he couldn’t look me in the eye.  (Actually, he seldom does that unless we are playing a game, and he wasn’t playing.  Not then, he wasn’t.)  He just told me he was not happy about being left home alone, and that it was not fun having no one to play peek and chase games with.  Then he left me and lay down beside Sylvia on her recliner chair.

I knew he was serious.  I felt sorry.  He obviously sensed that.  As I walked by to get a cool glass of water, he called me over.  And told me he knew I was sorry.  And then he blessed me.  Isn’t that a nice kitty?

Midnight gives me his blessing

It is nice to know that my little buddy is okay again.  Now I face the problem, “Do I dare to do that again?”

  1. Aw!!! I'm glad you guys made up. 🙂

We were going to leave Livvy for 3 days while we vacationed in the Adirondacks, but a few days before we left, I couldn't do it. I had to take her with me. I'm glad I did. She's a sensitive young lady, and we got to stay at the the cabin an extra day. 🙂

  2. Our two little ones, Pib the orange and Star the white one were left alone a lot (weeks at a time). Then we brought Pib here where he is never left alone. Some days I think he wishes to return to peace instead of chaos.

  3. You got off easy. When we got home we discovered a decorative jar of dried beans that normally sits on top of one of the upper kitchen cabinets had found it's way to the tile floor several feet below. The cat survived. The jar of beans did not.

The route to the top was long and dangerous but the cat made it with no problems. (It has since been blocked)

Congratulations on your trip and safe return.

  4. Oh, they always give you the snub when you come home. That is your punishment–guilt. I see that it worked. 😉

Don't worry about the little guy–he was fine sleeping the days away, taking a bath on the kitchen table, walking on all of the counters he's not allowed on usually, and drinking out of the toilet. Don't let him fool ya!
