Living in a Multi-Dimensional World

It started as a joke.  Something clever that some folks might not understand.  A concept that . . . well judge for yourself.  I created this motivational poster and posted it on this blog:

If you don’t understand the message read the number in the top line as “one-zero” not as “ten.”  It has to do with the binary number system, where the digits are 1 and 0.

I knew my sons would immediately grasp and enjoy this play on number systems.  What I didn’t know was that yin and yang in the poster would kick off a family discussion.  Within a very short time, I received yin and yang in animated gif format.

I liked this animated play on duality.  Did it stop there?  Of course not.  Anything worth doing is worth overdoing.  Right?  Right!

So, to protect the guilty I won’t name names, it wasn’t long after that another animated gif arrived in my e-mail inbox.

This one is fascinating.  At least to me it is. 🙂  I’m thinking you can’t call it yin and yang when there are three elements at work in three dimensions.  What would you call it?  Maybe yin, yang and yong?

Could we add yeng?  Four dimensions.  I remember studying that briefly in on of my math classes at the university.  Okay, mathematically we could move to four, five and beyond dimensions.  The problem comes in illustrating that graphically.  Sorry Charlie. 🙁  That won’t work.

Back to where we started–motivational posters.  I had to do this one after the recent gathering of blogger buds here at Secondary Rds Hq.

Here’s hoping your week is off to a great start.  And always remember that a day without sunshine is like . . . night. 🙄

    • You may well be binary my friend. Nevertheless, I see you as being somewhat more complicated than that. But, that just what I think–you may have a different opinion. 😀

    • Agree. As the expressions says, “Like father, like son.” Or, if you prefer, “Hijo del tigre sale pintado.” 😆
Wear the BPM shoe only if it fits. 😉

  1. Too funny! And you really have four dimensions in that second animation because it has motion. I’m surprised no on nattered at you about the eastern philosophy components of yin and yang.

    • You are of course correct. Now you have me thinking about the fourth dimension. Is it motion or is it time? How can you have motion with out movement along the time line? Those two seem to be intertwined. Are they fourth and fifth dimensions? Or merely some kind of unity, the two representing the fourth dimension?

  2. I had to come over since you’re pals with both Lin and Priscilla, and they’re pals of mine. Plus you’re a Michigan guy which is my home state. 🙂

And I love that you and your sons “get” each other!

    • Hi Liz,
Thanks for dropping by. Yes, Lin and Pricilla are long-time friends here in the blogosphere. I see your comments there and have dropped in on your blog from time to time. I am a Michiganian in fact and in heart. Sylvia and I did spend 19 years in Connecticut and 3 in Ecuador, but Michigan will always be home.

I couldn’t be more pleased with my sons. If you were to be with us for a while, you would soon see that they do share a chromosome and half my DNA.

  3. And along with that, each of those BPM’s should receive the badge that you created—I think it appropriate with the photo. (I might have to steal that one for my sidebar!)
