It Was a First

Until this morning I had never seen a red-winged blackbird nest.  I knew where they nested.  It’s hard to miss that.  But I had never actually seen a nest.

On Saturday I had trimmed some trees and tossed the trimmings into the trailer.  I didn’t take them down to the brush pile.  The neighbor had cut the area, which I had to cross and I didn’t want to drive across the hay.  He baled it later that day.

This morning I took the brush to the brush pile.  As I was leaving I looked beside the trampled grass and saw a small willow tree and in it a nest.

Can you see it in the middle of the shot?  I returned with the camera and watched the mother fly up to the power line where she gave me the stink eye.

Three eggs in the nest.

Three eggs in the nest.

I wasted no time getting a shot of the nest contents–three large eggs.  Then I beat a hasty retreat to leave mother to her duties.

  1. I never actually saw it, but I got too close to one a few years ago. The parent like to took my head off. Would have, too, had she bigger beak and claws. I skedaddled.

  2. Took me a while, but I found it – almost as bad as trying to locate a Killdeer nest.

    • I was within touching distance before I finally saw it. The killdeer are crazy and they’ll nest in the middle of a dirt driveway, in a parking lot or in our lawn, and those nests are [nearly] invisible.

  3. Oh, it’s beautiful!! Look how nicely she made that nest. 🙂 Red-wing blackbirds are my favorite birds. I wish them much luck out in the world!

    • The red-wing blackbirds are nice. I like to hear their song in the spring.

I like to watch the blue birds as they capture flying insects. Swallows may be the best as they swoop and perform aerobatics in search of snacks. :frolic:

  4. I’m sure she was grateful you left, but she prolly still doesn’t trust the human. :tiphat:

Better for you to find it than your sweet cat (birds don’t think cats are sweet). :hkitty:

    • I’m sure she doesn’t trust us two-legged, bothersome critters.

As for Nellie (our puss), she has shown no interest in going outdoors.

  5. Very special. I love finding a bird’s nest. The cutest one I ever found was a hummingbird’s nest when we lived in Colorado.

    • Finding a hummingbird nest would be special! Grackles, robins and doves have their special places around here and those I spot each year. This year, the neighbor has bluebirds in the houses that he built specially for them. 🙂
