Last week, I was returning from the mail box when I saw this fellow in the driveway. The praying mantis is a regular visitor this time of year. I thought you might like to see one too. So I went in to the house and returned with the camera. Our friend had waited patiently for my return. I took the shot above and thought, “That’s almost a ‘God’s Eye’ View.” How can I make it more interesting?

The answer was obvious. Get a Mantis’ eye view. So I sat the camera on the driveway and captured the image above. I only cropped it. There is no other processing.

  1. Yikes! Though a great photo, kinda scary. I'm not into the creepy crawlers. Fantastic color though.

  2. Wow Chuck we better all watch out. you'll be giving all of us a run for our money.

This is an incredible shot! You know when living in Texas I saw these all the time.

But, I just now realized that I don;t see them here where we are in Oklahoma.

We're only 27 miles in. But, I don;t think I have seen one in the 9 years we have lived here.

    Wow awesome.

I also read your post for Sunday. you were blessed with a very special mother and it shows in both you and Clara!

It's a wonderful tribute. I was not feeling well this weekend and apologize for not dropping in!!

Have a good one and hopefully I'll see you tomorrow!!

  3. Clara, I'm sure that the warmth of the drive was part of it. She stayed there while I took several shots and was still there when I went back in the house.

Sharkbytes, Yes, I did see your great post that featured the praying mantis. You had some excellent shots there. (Folks if you haven't seen it, be sure to visit.)

Jakill, They are regulars around here this time of year.

Jacq, Right, nature is so wonderful. It's great to enjoy it and capture some images of the wonderfulness of the ordinary.

    Ann, Thanks.

Justine, That's the advantage of a point-and-shoot camera. Look at the screen on the back. Don't have to peek in the itty-bitty peep hole.

  4. Holy cow, that picture is AMAZING! I figured you had laid yourself down on the driveway. Pretty smart to just put the camera there and click away!

    Justine 😮 )

  5. Awesome! Very nice shot… and so polite of your mantis to sit against a plain background so the camera would focus nicely. I assume you saw my series on Monsters and Fairies last week- with a featured mantis

  6. She must have been enjoying the sunshine on your driveway. It's amazing she sat still for that second picture. It's great!

  7. Lin, Yes, they are incredible, beautiful and creepy cool. Thanks. It was a sudden inspiration to go for that low-angle shot. I'm glad that it turned out okay.

  8. Oh, that's a beauty! Aren't they incredible beings?? So creepy cool. I love that wicked face complete with jowls of death! We've got one on the side of the house that we've been watching–but I don't have such a great shot of her. Good photography, Chuck!
