Sylvia Hits the Ceiling

The project started last week in the guest room.  It’s a continuation of the work Sylvia has been doing on the ceilings.  It involves wetting the “cottage cheese” that the builder installed, and when it has softened, scraping the bumpy, lump plaster off.  This leaves a smooth finish on the ceiling and results in a room that seems much brighter.

Work has begun on the guest room ceiling.

This week, attention has shifted to the other end of the house.  The dining room and kitchen were Sylvia’s Monday/Tuesday targets.  Wednesday, she did some clean up in those rooms and moved into the dining area.  She had to stop before finishing.

This morning in the dining area.

Looks kind of bare, doesn’t it?  After breakfast, we cleared the family room (the open area behind the camera).  Needless to say, a lot of items are piled up in other parts of the house.  I’m not going to show you that. :beam:

The final step is to paint the smooth ceilings.  We love the results that we see in the rooms that Sylvia has already done. :awe:

  1. We’ve done that project and it is easy if you wet it down sufficiently. The only hard part is on your neck and arms as you have to constantly reach up.

Sylvia is doing a GREAT job! You will be soooo happy that you did that–it makes painting easier and you can wash the ceiling if you want to.

    Go, Sylvia!!

    • Sylvia sends greetings from atop the step ladder. This week she’s painting and being urged on by someone who’s anxious to go rescue a certain kitty from the animal shelter. :zip:

We love the way the office and the two full bathroom ceilings came out. :awe:

  2. What a beautiful room with such a lovely view. Rosey sent me here. Best of luck to you, great job.

    • Hi JJ,

Thanks for the visit and the comment. We love our house on a hill out in the country. Always something interesting to see out these beautiful windows. Best of luck to you too.

  3. I’m just stopping by from Rosey’s place 🙂 Had to comment because we have that dreaded popcorn stuff on our ceilings and I despise it! :banghead: Wonder if our landlord would let me scrape it off? So much comes off when I’m trying to dust anyway, it couldn’t hurt to try! Your room looks beautiful, I just love all of the light from the windows!

    • Hi Henrietta,

Isn’t Rosey great? We hate the popcorn too. Fortunately, we are the landlords and can take care of it. This house is located on a hill and was perfectly sited. The long axis runs from southwest to northeast. I don’t know if it was serendipity or excellent planning, but I love the way sunlight enters the house and the views are [nearly] perfect.

Good luck with you landlord. It can’t hurt to ask, can it?

  4. This is the new thing to get rid of the popcorn ceiling as the designers call them. But, oh my goodness I know you guys have got to be wore out.

We have remodeled three homes including working on this one and what you are doing is not an easy task. But, I do think you will both enjoy the difference very much.

Why on earth were we all in love with plaster, texture, carpet and wallpaper so much anyway?

Take care and I wish you both success and don’t overdo! 😉

    • My theory is that the “popcorn” covers a multitude of sins.

Perhaps when it comes to “plaster, texture, carpet and wallpaper” Bill Cosby had it right. Brain damage. 😉

I’m supposed to monitor the overdo it part. I didn’t do so well this morning. 🙁

    • Sylvia is doing most of the work Terry. She did other rooms earlier and they do look much better when the ceilings are smooth.

  5. Greetings from the Mile High City!

It is so good to see the results of this project as we have the same task on our to do list.

    • Hi Meghan,

Sylvia sends greetings. If you’re going to do the job yourself, be sure to see us before you begin. Sylvia’s experience will be most helpful as would a couple of items that you’ll want to borrow. 😀

  6. What a job! Kudos to you and the Mrs. for tackling it. That’s a nice room for nature watching you have in the picture. I like it (and snow always looks prettier from inside the house, or at least it does in my opinion  ).

    • We’ve seen a lot through those windows. 😯

I agree. Snow is always prettier when you’re inside looking out upon it. :surrender:

  7. I love bright and beautiful rooms!

This should be very satisfying when finished.

Anyway, I’m meeting you because Rosey A was talking about you 🙂

She is such a dahlin and if she knows someone, I know it’s a good someone!

So just waving at you from up the road 🙂
