Friday marked the beginning of a new month. Sylvia spent most of the morning packing and loading the car, and by lunch-time she was at her father’s house. That afternoon they drove to Glen Lake, which is near the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore and sand dunes. Sylvia’s great grandfather built a cottage there many years ago. It’s a great place for a vacation, and that’s what they’re doing.
About six PM, I heard the sound of rain on the roof. This time it was louder than normal and a single look told the story. Hail the size of very large peas accounted for the din.
What do you think of that? The warm earth and heavy rain washed the hail quickly away.
Lots and lots of rain fell. Nellie was frightened and hid under a chair.
Bliss Drain became a lake. Look at that rain gauge. Yes, that’s 4.5 inches in about an hour. Hail fell for over a half hour.
When Nellie came to hide under a chair, she was running and acted upset. Later, I went to investigate. About an inch of water in a basement that is always dry. It’s nice to live on a hill. But despite that a lot of stuff got wet.
It was going to be a busy weekend for me. More next time.
Rut Roh. We, too, are up north with our Elders. I thought the house sitter was exaggerating about the rain but I guess not!
We have no drain in the basement and were quite floodprone when we first moved in. Everything is up on shelves or pallets so hopefully the damage is minimal.
In the 14 years that we’ve lived here, we’ve never that much rain in so short a time. You’ll have a project waiting for you when you return. Sorry about that. ❓
Bummer- I know you use the basement regularly. And… you highlight the calf wandering in the rain with no explanation????
Thanks, Sharkey. Looks like I’m guilty. I plead, “No Contest.”
Sorry about your stuff getting wet. That’s no fun at all. A memo needs to go out that rain is needed, but not all at one time.
Thanks, Verla. It’s only stuff, and while it’s not fun, it’s also not critical. Today (Monday) we had another 1.4 inches of rain. :badmood:
Well that’s not the way to spend the next few days. Good thing you checked!
Agree — on both accounts. :stars:
Bummer.
Well said my friend! More rain today. Also, flash flood warnings. I just wanna cry. 😥
Aw, rats. What a mess. We don’t have a basement here, so we don’t hang on to too much. Basements tend to flood in Chicago, so you always have to be prepared. There are those who tempt their fate by putting in carpeting and nice furniture. I wouldn’t gamble.
Hope it isn’t too much of a mess for you. 🙁
Poor Nellie.
We have a large and nice basement and this is the only time we’ve had this much water in it. For over 10 years it had been almost completely dry.
I did get some help, but I’m needing some Recovery & Recuperation. :surrender:
Nellie seems to be doing okay.
