You file a comment on a blog you like and then you are asked to enter a string of characters for “Word Verification.” What’s with these verification words? Most of the time they make no sense at all. But . . . once in a while you encounter one that is like someone trying to pull a joke on you. Here are some of them that I’ve seen last month. They maybe trying to hide the true meaning, but it seems obvious to me. Here’s what I’m talking about:
1. Oomishba — Pig Latin for “Boomish,” which means some thing is loud and percussive.
2. Nubet — Another, unique wager.
3. Waryanne — A cautious queen of England.
4. Phothr — The guy that got your muthr in a family way.
5. Mandye — Artificial coloring for masculine facial hair.
6. Inkscyt — A location for publishers.
7. Slyrin – Dupont makes Delrin which they say, “bridges the gap between metals and ordinary plastics.” Slyrin is a Delrin derivative that is used in stealth applications.
Have you noticed this too? What verification words have caught your attention? Is something going on here?
One more question for you who have both word verification and comment moderation turned on, “Why?
Rachel, Let's see what they say.
Priyanka, Word verification makes sense as an option to moderation. It get the comments up soon. The questions is why both.
Meghan, Thanks for the report.
PJ, I'm getting a couple of spam posts on some days. It's probably good to have a gate.
Lin, That's also a good idea!
Shutterbug, I understand. Sometimes those character strings seem to beg for a definition — at least they do to me.
Dawn, Thanks. That makes sense.
FishHawk, Of course you would say that. 😎
Ms Marie, That what I do here.
Thanks to all for the comments.
I don't have word verification because it bothers me to have to do it so I don't make people do it for my blog. But I do have comment moderation and that's because I always ended up missing a comment. Especially now that I have a contest going on, its better for me to have it moderated.
Methinks you are just making those up. Although, they were good.
I have found it necessary at times when I am away and unable to control the spam or nasty comments. I have one blog that is 3 years old and is well known by the spam bots. I guess it just depends on the individual and how much time they have to monitor their blogs.
To be honest I am too irritated by having to type in the word verification to notice any meanings 🙂 I do have comment moderation turned on though because I heavily advertise and there are some people out there who just live for negative comments so I like to keep an eye on it. I don't however see any reason for both verification and moderation. Good post Chuck.
Oh Chuck! We much think alike. I have a collection of really funny ones to share soon.
I don't like the verification and lately, the words are all around 10 letters long! It's a hassle. I'm getting a ton of spam lately (1 or 2 a day in my old posts), but I can catch it in moderating posts older than 3 days.
i had word verification for awhile, but found that it wasn't justifiable. i don't get much spam, actually i think i have only had a couple in the whole time i have had my blog.
have a wonderful day…hugz!
I dunno but I do know a certain kitty seems to have taken up residence in my barn. I saw her last night safe and sound.
i completely agree wid u. word verifications r a kind of harassment and making a fool of us. almost all the websites does it these days…. thnk u.
I'm equally mystified by the people who have moderation and word verification on. I just moderate and I delete 1-2 spam messages each month, which is hardly unmanagable.
