She Scores!

It was our granddaughter’s senior year in high school.  She was co-captain of the water polo team.  (today she is starting her third fourth year in nursing school.)

The pass sends the ball to Briana in the center

Briana rises up and takes the shot.

The ball entered the net in the upper left corner.  Score for the Falcons.

While Briana had plans to continue water polo into her college career, other priorities overrode those plans.  Those priorities revealed the spirit of one who has a heart for serving other more than self.  Little wonder that her family is proud of her.

I’ve been lax on posting lately, and I apologize for that.  Today, I’m sharing this picture of my paternal grandmother with you.

My grandma the fashion model

Yup, her mother ran a millinery shop.  Quite enterprising for a turn of the [last] century woman.  Grandma was a piano player and when she was older derived some income for playing for the silent movies.  I miss her stories and especially that infectious laugh she had and passed along to others.

Improvising

It was forty years ago that Sylvia, the boys and I moved to Quito Ecuador.  We had to wait for furniture.  It was custom made back then/there.  It didn’t take too long for a couch and two chairs to be made and delivered.  The dining room set took longer.  We improvised.

Last week, I shared a photo of our granddaughter and her mother sitting on Michigan’s Sleeping Bear Sand Dune.  This week I have two more images of the granddaughter from that same weekend to share.

Briana and Abuelo (Grandpa Chuck)

It was a fun weekend for us.  After Sylvia captured this image, we traded baby and camera.  Then it was my turn.

Briana and Abuela (Grandma Sylvia)

The pictures were taken at the family cottage on Glen Lake.  This week, that’s where you’ll find Sylvia with her father and sister.  Briana is getting ready to start her senior year in nursing school.

Twenty Years Ago

Twenty years ago, Sylvia and I were living in Connecticut.  Summer vacation, and usually Christmas, meant a trip back to our home state of Michigan to spend time with family.  Part of that time would be spent at Glen Lake.

On this trip, we were at the lake with family.  On a nice day, we made the short drive to the base of the Sleeping Bear Sand Dune.  It was the tradition for us to climb to the top of the dune.  We did and so did son, Bryant, his wife, Barbara, and our granddaughter, Briana.

Can you believe that little girl is now a senior at Grand Valley State U?  She is also an honors student in the nursing school.

The Joy of Friends

Last August four blogger buds came together for our first ever face-to-face.  Our house is about in the center of our geographic spread and so we hosted it.  The idea came from LinVanilla and Shark rounded out the group.

After a picnic lunch, we had lots of time to talk and explore the grounds beside our secondary road.  The garden received a lot of attention and visitors received some of the bountiful harvest that it produced.

No gathering of friends is complete without pictures.  This group was no exception.  Lin’s hubby, Joe, did the honors.

As Joe was taking the shot, Shark observed, “I’m always the shortest one in the photo.”  Lin gave me an elbow in the ribs.  I looked at her.  She nodded.  I nodded.  Joe took another shot.

Who’s the shortest now, eh Shark?

Class clowns caught in the act.

Perhaps we can do that again some day.  I certainly hope so.  That was fun!

Remembering Midnight

Today, my flashback involves Midnight, the cat we used to care for.  I sure do miss him and his kittenish ways.  Nellie is a huge contrast.  Much more sedate, and as a consequence, less fun and entertainment.

My little buddy was full of antics–a real fun-loving guy.

Many years would pass before the cute little blond-haired girl would walk down the aisle and take my hand.  I love this pic of Sylvia and her mom taken in the 40s.

Sylvia has always loved the water.  This picture was taken in Glen Lake in front of her great grandfather’s cottage.  It’s a beautiful place.

We spent our honeymoon at that cottage.  It was horrible hot there back then.  We returned 50 years later and the weather was crazy cold. Ho boy!

Topless Model

Yes, I was one of those (topless model).  Here’s the proof.

Me in 1942

So did Mom put me there to frighten critters from the garden?  Or am I sun bathing?  We always had a garden back then and now too.  You can eat the stuff you find in the grocery store.  I prefer home grown organic veggies.  Always have.  How about you?

Flashback

I discovered this meme through Rosey.  It looks like fun, and I’m going to give it a try.

The following pic was taken at the home of my paternal grandparents in 1942.  Grandpa always had a dog.  I really don’t remember this one.

This was 1942 and the photo was taken in Ingham County, Michigan north of the [then] Village of Leslie.  At that time, my parents and I lived in Lansing, just a few blocks from the capital building.

The next year, my sister Barbara was born and in November Dad went into the Army Air Corp.  An eye infection took him out of the training program long enough that he never did see action.  He returned home in time for Thanksgiving of 1945.

These Days

The C-T and bone scans are now scheduled for next Tuesday.  I should know the results by the end of the week.
