Sunday ~ Proverbs 3:7 – 12

3:7 Do not be wise in your own eyes;
fear the LORD and shun evil.

8 This will bring health to your body
and nourishment to your bones.

9 Honor the LORD with your wealth,
with the firstfruits of all your crops;

10 then your barns will be filled to overflowing,
and your vats will brim over with new wine.

11 My son, do not despise the LORD’s discipline
and do not resent his rebuke,

12 because the LORD disciplines those he loves,
as a father the son he delights in.

True wisdom realizes how much it doesn’t know. How much it fails to grasp and understand. Solomon speaks about this shortcoming and gives the remedy.

In Chapter 26, he says this:

12 Do you see a man wise in his own eyes?
There is more hope for a fool than for him.

Proverbs 6:15-19

Here are six things God hates,
and one more that he loathes with a passion:
eyes that are arrogant,
a tongue that lies,
hands that murder the innocent,
a heart that hatches evil plots,
feet that race down a wicked track,
a mouth that lies under oath,
a troublemaker in the family.

Proverbs for Father’s Day

King Solomon

10:7a The memory of the righteous will be a blessing.

20:7 The righteous man leads a blameless life; blessed are his children after him.

23:22 Listen to your father, who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old.

23 Buy the truth and do not sell it;
get wisdom, discipline and understanding.

24 The father of a righteous man has great joy;
he who has a wise son delights in him.

On this Father’s Day, I am thankful for my father. I’m even more thankful for my two sons, Bryant and Scott.

Scott, Bryant and their most wonderful mother, Sylvia — 1972

I love you all.

Sunday School ~ Proverbs on Right Living

Proverbs 2:6-8 For the LORD gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. He holds victory in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless, for he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones.
(NIV)

10:3a The LORD does not let the righteous go hungry. (NIV)

11:28b the righteous will thrive like a green leaf. (NIV)

21:21 He who earnestly seeks after and craves righteousness, mercy, and loving-kindness will find life in addition to righteousness (uprightness and right standing with God) and honor. (Amplified Bible)

Sunday School ~ Romans 16 b

St Paul wraps up his letter to the Romans with Chapter 16.

17
Now I urge you, brethren, keep your eye on those who cause dissensions and hindrances contrary to the teaching which you learned, and turn away from them.

18 For such men are slaves, not of our Lord Christ but of their own appetites; and by their smooth and flattering speech they deceive the hearts of the unsuspecting.

19 For the report of your obedience has reached to all; therefore I am rejoicing over you, but I want you to be wise in what is good and innocent in what is evil.

20 The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you.

And thus end Paul’s letter to the Romans with a warning and a commendation for their obedience to God.

Sunday School ~ Romans 16 a

This final chapter of Romans begins with the introduction of Phoebe of Cenchreae. She is most probably the person that carried Paul’s letter to the church at Rome. In Paul’s word:

1Now I introduce and commend to you our sister
Phoebe, a deaconess of the church at Cenchreae,
2That you may receive her in the Lord
[with a Christian welcome],
as saints (God’s people) ought
to receive one another.
And help her in whatever matter
she may require
assistance from you,
for she has been a helper
of many including myself
[shielding us from suffering].

(Amplified Bible)

Paul goes on to list Priscilla and Aquila, They were ethnic Greek tent makers who had come from Pontus (the northeast Black Sea coast of modern Turkey). They had been expelled from Rome and were at that time living where Paul was in Corinth. He also mentions a rather long list of individuals who were positive additions to the church.

Interesting that the list starts with this exemplary woman of Cenchreae, Phoebe.

Sunday School ~ Memorial Day

Psalm 116:15
Precious in the sight of the LORD
is the death of his saints.
(NIV)

Memorial Day

With tears in his young eyes,
he stood beside his mom.
The preacher spoke the words,
beside the fresh-dug grave.
Inside the flag-draped box,
a father lay at rest.
His fresh pressed uniform,
showed his proven courage.
Loving hand now lay still,
no more to serve and give.
The bugler blows clear tone,
the lad stands tall and straight.
The shots sound loudly forth,
the youngster covers ears.
Proud young men fold the flag,
they give it to the mom,
“From a grateful nation . . .”
Casket goes into the earth,
as hot tears, like rain, fall.
Then flower petals thrown,
adorn the warrior’s grave.

His son will follow him,
with heart that’s brave and true.
Will he go in harm’s way?
Will blood-bought peace prevail?
May God grant the lad life,
in his peace-blessed homeland.

Sunday School ~ Romans 15c

Paul end the fifteenth chapter of Romans with a request for prayer and prayer for his readers in Rome. Consider the basis of his request, the nature of his request and the purpose thereof. Then consider Paul’s prayer for his fellow believers in Rome.

30My friends, by the power of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the love that comes from the Holy Spirit, I beg you to pray sincerely with me and for me. 31Pray that God will protect me from the unbelievers in Judea, and that his people in Jerusalem will be pleased with what I am doing. 32Ask God to let me come to you and have a pleasant and refreshing visit. 33I pray that God, who gives peace, will be with all of you. Amen. (Contemporary English Version)

Let us remember the power of prayer this week and be faithful in exercising that power. Sylvia’s father (age 91, a widower) could use a prayer as he is in the hospital with a bladder infection. Jill’s daughter, Alexa, has been released from the hospital but is in need of continuing prayer. Will you join your fellow believing bloggers and pray?

Sunday School ~ Mother’s Day

Here is today’s Sunday School lesson in two verses:

Romans 15: 20, 21 Thus my ambition has been to preach the Gospel, not where Christ’s name has already been known, lest I build on another man’s foundation; But [instead I would act on the principle] as it is written, They shall see who have never been told of Him, and they shall understand who have never heard [of Him]

{Amplified Bible}

Mother’s Day

How fondly I remember my mother. I thank God for her and the life she lead.

Mom and me

I especially thank God for the wonderful mother of my sons. May God bless her each day of the year.

Sylvia and her blessed husband

Happy Mother’s Day to all and God bless each of you.

Sunday School ~ Romans 15a

The theme for the fist portion of Romans 15 is Unity. A goal that we should seek today. Paul puts it this way:

1 We then who are strong ought to bear with the scruples of the weak, and not to please ourselves. 2 Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, leading to edification. 3 For even Christ did not please Himself; but as it is written, “The reproaches of those who reproached You fell on Me.” 4 For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope. 5 Now may the God of patience and comfort grant you to be like-minded toward one another, according to Christ Jesus, 6 that you may with one mind and one mouth glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. 7 Therefore receive one another, just as Christ also received us, to the glory of God.
(New King James Version)

Perhaps we should ask ourselves if we are part of the solution or part of the problem.
