Eagle or Pig?

It’s hard to soar like an eagle when you’re mired in the mud.

I’m feeling a bit “mired.”  I kept busy yesterday exploring blog options for church.  My friend, Robert, spent the morning with me as we checked out WordPress, and discovered it gets an 80% grade.

Robert and I had talked about some of the technical aspects of a church blog.  We especially wanted to include some functional features.  My face is now scarred from walking into walls.  At times yesterday, it looked like we were going to do it.  And then it was face first into another brick wall.

Later, I double checked for new features in my old friend, Blogger.  Plenty of good news there.  Bed time came–and went.  I decided to call it a night.  I’ll continue working on the project today.  I think the end is in sight, but I have one more option to explore.

I didn’t get in my usual “rounds” yesterday.  Maybe I will today.  If not, I haven’t forgotten you.

  1. Blogger works for me because it is easy. I'm not so bright when it comes to all of this computer stuff. And being that I just do this for fun, I'm not about making an effort to learn all about it. Might fry the wee little brain!

  2. Chuck- I'm curious what Blogger feature made you call it the best choice. What feature were you looking for? I'm not so crazy about the email scanning, either.

  3. Thanks for the comments friends. At least for now Blogger is my best choice and I will go with that.

WordPress is indeed best on a self-hosted site. I don't have that option available to me in my current hosting packages. I can switch, but I'd have to start everything from scratch. I'm not willing to do that, nor to pay for an additional hosting account.

  4. Meanwhile, I've just a week to decide what to do about Blogger and Google's new privacy policy. To stay or not to stay, that is the question.

  5. The free WordPress.com blog platform is not so hot. I recommend the self-hosted WordPress installation. I know you are a pretty tech savvy guy, but if you need any help getting information, getting started, or need to know some reputable companies, feel free to ask me. I have some links and reviews to various services (domain name registrars, etc) on my tech blog.

One thing to keep in mind is that Google owns Blogger and they do reserve the right to take your website down if they feel their terms of service have been violated. I have heard several stories of such draconian actions by G. It's thankfully rare, but it has happened to enough of my peers that I stay far away from Blogger now. Since the blog will be religious, you just never know how G will view it. I don't mean to scare you away from Blogger, just to let you know the risks, from one friend to another. 🙂

  6. From what I understand WordPress is best when used on its paid platform and on a self hosted site. I have heard lots of complaints regarding its free platform – worse than blogger if you can imagine! I know there is another one or two out there but since blogger has settled down and it's relatively cheap to buy a domain in most cases I'm pretty happy with it; until the next time it goes wonky
