Garden Time

Yesterday, Sylvia and I started this season’s efforts on the vegetable garden.  Yes, there will be flowers in there too.  First we checked on the plants that went in last year.

Giant garlic looking good

The garlic plants are looking strong.  These were a gift from Sylvia’s cousin.  He’s the one that keeps entertained through items sent to me e-mail inbox.  🙂

We have two varieties of asparagus. The Martha Washington seems to be doing better

Perhaps I should mention that after I put the camera down the serious weeding began.  Pay no attention to weeds.  Please.

Rosanne asked about the rhubarb that we got from her and Dale.  It is doing great.  Rhubarb needs a lot of nutrition to flourish so rotted manure is what it needs.  Or llama droppings, and neighbor Meghan will supply us with some from her llama, Grace.

Rhubarb or pie plant makes the best pies IMHO

After the photo op, we pulled weeds and tilled the rest of the garden.  Today I have a very sore back.  But I feel good and am already dreaming of rhubarb pie.

  1. Grubbing in the grit, aka, gardening. Worked on that yesterday, too. In my case it isn’t the back, but rather the knees. Someday spouse is going to have to call EMTs to get me up off the ground. : 🙂

    • It may not be easy, but it certainly is satisfying! Sorry about the knees, and the bad news is that the warranty has expired. Fortunately, you haven’t. Today’s forecast calls for mostly sunny and 80 deg F. Gotta find something to do outside, and that’s for sure. 8)

  2. We’ve only put out flowers so far, some of which didn’t do well at all during the cold snap. I was a little too quick with my planting…a lesson well learned. Good luck w/the garden, it’s looking good.

    • Sylvia is usually very cautious to make sure we’re past the last hard frost before she plants. That usually means that most are done the last half of May.

  3. Oh, be sure to make some rhubarb sauce to put over your vanilla ice cream! That’s my favorite. YUM!

You look like a true farmer, Chuck.

    • That does sound good, but I prefer pie or rhubarb crisp with just a touch of cinnamon.

Well Lin, looks can be deceiving. I’ll settle for gardener.

  4. Looking good! We had our first rhubarb on Sunday. Not enough for a pie, but there was enough for one of our other fav rhubarb desserts.

    • The leaves on our are huge, but the stalks are still kind of short. Next year it should be a lot better.
