Have You Read This?

This is not a paid post.  The opinions are mine and freely shared.

I splurged and bought a Nook HD+.  I found that I could read from the back-lit screen for extended periods of time.  Reading more than three or four pages from a book printed on paper had become a difficult chore for me.  I can also use my Nook to surf the Web using the Chrome browser which comes already installed.  For fun, I have apps for Sudoku and Angry Birds.  (The best feature of the latter is the sound effects.)

I like mine so much that I bought one for Sylvia.  We find that it’s also a great way to get books from the library . . . and you don’t have to leave the house to fetch or return a book.

I’m getting toward the end of Paddy Plays in Dead Mule Swamp by Joan H Young (aka Sharkey).  This is the third in this series.  These are excellent books.  They are easy reads with compelling story lines.  You can discover more about Joan’s writing at Books Leaving Footprints.

Footnote:

Before this was posted, I had finished reading the book.  I stayed up way past my normal bed time, but the story had pulled me into it so that the only way to extract myself was to finish the story.

    • If you like Hollow Tree, you’ll like the others. Be sure to visit Joan online and tell her you enjoyed her book(s). God bless. 😎

  1. Oh, and I just downloaded The Hollow Tree at Dead Man’s Swamp. This one was free and if I like it, I will consider paying for the others. What can I say, I’m cheap!!

    • I would have said “smart” rather than “cheap.” I did the same thing. Hollow Tree is the shortest of the three in this series. Joan is working on the fourth in this series, having just finished Chapter 19. I encourage you to purchase the other two and help a friend and fellow blogger. Have you visited her blog My Quality Day?

  2. A couple of years ago, my hubby bought me a Kyros Coby tablet for Christmas. It was cheap and the thought was, we’d see if I liked it before we spent a lot on a tablet or e-reader. What I have isn’t too great for surfing the web, although it will do in a pinch, but I love it as an e-reader. I downloaded the Kindle app, which greatly improved it IMHO. Mostly because that opened the door for free Kindle books.
Here is a great place to go to find sites where you can get free Kindle books

One of the things I like best is I can lay in bed at night and read without bothering the hubby by having a light on.

I don’t know if you’ve ever read my blog Off the Bookshelf, but everything I’ve read since July have been books I’ve gotten free from Amazon.com.
I also read books I check out of the Topeka Public Library.

All that being said, there is still something special about the look, feel, and smell of a printed on paper book!!

    HAPPY READING!!

    • I have visited Off the Bookshelf. I don’t follow book blogs, but I do follow your other two blogs. I seldom comment, however.

Sylvia and I use the Overdrive app to check out e-books through our local library’s association. The Topeka library should have a similar program. :hkitty:

  3. I purchased one for my daughter-in-law awhile back and she loves it! The Kindle doesn’t have that light, mine doesn’t anyway. I’ve heard the commercial that they have a white page now (Kindle) but I still don’t think it lights up. I had a light that attaches to the top but that got broken very easily. I think I’d prefer that backlight you’ve mentioned here.

    • Some of the newer Kindles do have back lighting. I was going to purchase the Kindle Fire HD, but after checking the Nook HD+ decided that it was a better deal. Kindle has just announced a newer model. 😎

        • Two taps to access settings, and then I reduce the back-light level to near minimum. My son does the same thing with his Kindle Fire HD. :beam:

    • There are pros and cons to both the ‘white paper’ readers and the back lit tablets. The main thing being if you read out doors. Then the back lit tablets are not so good. But, seriously, how often to do read outside?
