I’m Glad It’s Today!

Yesterday, I came into the office with a cup of coffee in my hand and saw that no new e-mail had come in over night.  That’s unusual.  I’m an early to bed and late to rise kind of guy.  Some of you night owls drop comments or send me stuff after I’m off to dream land.  Some of you early birds have already visited by the time I come dragging in her with a cup of wake me up in hand.

Don’t forget those special offers from my favorite online vendors.  (I buy about once a year–twice if I’m on a spree.)  There were no Nigerian widows, British bankers or UN officials wanting to give me a few million dollars.  Okay, I’m still holding out.  The ante keeps going up and before Christmas I expect to score a hundred million bucks.  That should get the mortgage company off my back and the feds on it.  Hah!

I opened my Web browser only to find this blog wouldn’t load.  A DNS (Domain Name Server) problem again?  No.  Nothing worked.

Then I brought up the command prompt and pinged the router that is the gateway from ISP to the Internet.  Fail.  I pinged the access point (where I connect to the ISP).  Fail.  I pinged my wireless router. Fail.  Things were not looking good at all!

I went to the basement.  The router was dark.  None of the lights were lit.  Power and power supply were okay.  I plugged the cable to my computer into the feed from the radio.

(I use a fixed wireless connection to my ISP.  Near the top of our 72 ft radio tower, there is a box with two radios in it.  One provides that link to the ISP through a directional and the other connects to an omni-directional antenna that several of our neighbors use to connect to our ISP. A single Ethernet cable connects to the wireless router that feeds the in-house land here in our home.)

Back in the office, my computer “came alive” and I was back online.  Today should see a new wireless router installed and the LAN restored here in the house.

Life is good!

  1. The internet coming back on is always a good day. I've had internet for over 15 years now, and I don't know what I'd do without it. Mine gets so slow I can barely use it sometimes because of some problem or other, but I still try my best to use it even on those days.

  2. Your radio/wireless setup makes me drool. I would LOVE to see that in action!!!

    Glad you're back on. 🙂

Email has been a little on the light side for me, too… but not because my router is ailing. I'm *still* spackling… it's my destiny for another whole week, so I may be MIA for a few days.

The weather here has finally turned cooler- praise God!

  3. Hooray! Don't you just hate when the computer is down??? Ugh.

Have a great weekend, Chuck! I can tell fall is approaching, it seems the days are getting shorter and it is getting dewy at night now. Can it be that summer is almost over?? Sigh.
