The Blizzard of 2011

Thank goodness it’s over!  I’m sitting here at 4:45 AM as I start to write this.  I’ve been awake for the last two hours.  I’m too sore to sleep.  After lunch yesterday, the snow was starting to taper down and winds were also abating.  I decided to go outside and see if I could get some of the mess cleared away.  It took a while to clear the drive to the barn.

I’m glad I didn’t have to clear all this by hand!  A few hours later and I was working my way down the driveway.

It was slow work, and the day kept moving on.  Fortunately the snow had stopped and the winds were calm.

As you can see, it was getting on toward late afternoon.  I still had a long way to go.

That’s when I got stuck.  There was a sheet of ice between the snow and the driveway.  In other words, no traction for my tractor.  I had to dig my way free.  It took quite a while and several attempts.

Just about the time I got the tractor free my neighbor with the BIG John Deere came to the rescue.  He cleaned out the worst of the bottom of the drive.  The sun was setting as I returned up the hill to do just a bit more near the house.

Maybe the county will send a snow plow down our road later today or tomorrow.  I don’t really care.  I’m too tired and sore to care.  Besides where else would a guy like me want to be?

  1. Ugh! While you have that nifty plow, I'm sure it was still hard work. We had a snowblower, but Joe had to shovel off the top layer for me to use the blower–it was WORK! Yikes. It's a good thing you don't have to be anywhere for a few days–how long will it take for the street to be cleared?

  2. Oh, man, I hate when that happens! A plow we were using got stuck, and we only got it out when we put small pieces of firewood behind each wheel to back out. Not fun! Hope you get plenty of rest! 😛

  3. Oh boy! Yup… I was sore this morning too. Ran the snowblower 3 times in 28 hours. And it's drifting in again as we speak. The mailbox is a black opening in a snowbank now.

Ha! My verification word is one R short of a serious situation: "distess"

  4. Glad you did not get hurt,Neighbors are great to have. and he one with big tractors are the best.

  5. What a lot of work. Ugh.

There's always the blow torch. 😀

We only got a spit of snow from this blizzard. Snow was full of moisture and very heavy, though.

Take it easy! You & Midnight deserve a nap. 😉

  6. It's funny. Here we have had bitter cold, then it warms up enough so that when it precipitates we get rain. Then the bitter cold comes back again. I think we are the only place in the northern part of the country WITHOUT snow.

  7. WOW!!!…and my husband got stuck pulling out of the driveway this AM because of the ice and piles and mounds of snow on our little street….you have an entire hillside to get down!!!!…glad that your friend w/ the John Dere came to the rescue…it's really quite a sight…get some rest…stay warm!!!

  8. Play and pay. Your fun in the snow results in aches and exhaustion. Thanks for the pictures, reassurances that our travel expense is money well spent.
    Stay warm. Stay safe.

  9. It could have taken you awhile with a shovel.LOL We have had 80 inches of snow so far this winter. It doesn't look like it is going to let up any time soon. Two more storms already forecast.
