Learning Never Stops

Some life lessons are best remembered when learned through a trial-and-error process.  That also seems to be the story of my life.

Or as Maxwell Smart said, “Missed it by that much.”  He also said, “Sorry about that, Chief.”

I’ve been blogging for eight and a half years.  During that time, I have discovered that there are four steps to a blog post.

  1. You gather your resources (photos, ideas, etc.) and compose your post.
  2. You proofread your post.
  3. You publish your post.
  4. You discover an error (or errors) in that post.

Has this ever happened to you?  Perhaps I should have stayed in shcool?

  1. If error-free blog post is the goal, what happens to the fun of blogging? Now, I do proof-read and I do hope for good spelling and grammar, but I do not let that override my goal of entertaining or enlightening the reader. If there is such.

    • Good point, sir. The fun and entertainment are all there in step one. Without those factors, what’s the point? I’m merely lamenting how often those errors slip by. :badmood:

  2. When I first started blogging I stressed a lot about having errors in the posts I published but I soon got over that.

Most blog followers are fluent readers who don’t notice errors in writing. What their brains tell them should be on the page wins out over what is actually on the page. It’s when fluent readers slow down to attend to detail that they pick up on errors. (e.g. my bro when I’m relating something about family)

    • During my years as a technical editor, I witnessed fluent readers not seeing mistakes. We all had to look at text and read it differently than we did at home. It is embarrassing to get all the body text perfect and miss an error in the title. :dunce:

  3. I am usually posting late at night…when I have a few minutes to tell a quick story and post a photo or something else that may pass as a post. I am sure I have misspellings, incorrect grammar and a host of other goofy things, but I’m not writing a novel….just posting some fun for me and maybe a few others to read. I don’t worry about it. If someone (usually Grace) emails to tell me of my error, I will go back and correct…otherwise I don’t fret. It is me….late in the day…usually tired…and it’s okay.

I don’t pay attention to errors on other blogs either. It’s the content that matters.
