Sightings ~ Turkey Vulture

The other day as I went to get the mail, I saw turkey vultures circling the neighbor’s field. Nothing new about that. From spring to fall these fellows and their mates keep the countryside scoured of small dead animals. It is amazing how quickly they can do away with a dead critter.

We should be grateful that these natural (dare I say it?) morticians do their business efficently. You might want to eat one of the turkeys that also inhabit these parts, but I don’t think you’d enjoy lunching on one of these guys. As I pondered their place in the greater scheme of things, I came up with this haiku:

Turkey Vulture

Graceful on the wing,
Death seeker rides upon wind,
Removes the fallen.

I’m glad they’re here.

My World ~ Our Meadow

Today I want to take you down to our meadow. Where we’ll be looking at grasses.

Looking at the neighbor’s house.

And barn.

Looking at our house.

Grasses growing.

And if you lay down and look up . . . ahhh.

Sightings ~ Life on the Lawn’s Edge

Wednesday, I mowed the lawn. I am not mowing it all this year. We are out in the country, and no cares how much (or little) grass gets cut. Okay, I keep it looking nice, the part in question is barely visible, and it’s far from the road. Unlike city lawns, we have lots of wild flowers (you may call them weeds if you like) and they add character and color.

One of the first things to catch your eye is Indian Paint Brush. At least that’s the name I know it by. Contrasts well with the grasses, doesn’t it?

It really does look like a paint brush. Such beauty — for free.

This lovely blossom starts with a pinkish tinge. It’s not spilled grape juice. Really, it’s not — even if it looks like it.

Hey look a customer stops to check a bloom.

Take a closer look. It really is more fun than mowing the lawn!

At the Game ~ Briana’s Friends

Attending Briana’s water polo games are something that Sylvia and I enjoy greatly. We love to watch co-captain, #7, as she demonstrates leadership in the water and at poolside. It’s also fun to see the other folks that come to watch.

Briana relaxes (?) during a brief halt in the action. In a short while she’ll be all business and all focus on action.

At a recent game, Kayleigh and Gretchen came to watch. They sat down beside us and we had a chance to chat with these two former Falcon stars. They are now University students, but it was Senior Night, and they came back to support their former teammates.

These two were regular visitors to Briana after she had foot surgery last summer. Needless to say, Briana’s parents (and grandparents) think these gals are the greatest. It was great to have someone else to yell and go completely beserk!

Plenty of action for #7 in the pool. Nobody in our immediate area wanted to miss a single play, and so we talked while we watched the action. No disappointments there.

As we talked with Kayleigh and Gretchen, I remembered the guys that showed up at one of Briana’s games during her freshman year. They were definitely part of her fan club. They saw the camera and reacted. It was fun.

Regional tournament this weekend, and after that the state tournament. That will bring this year’s girl’s water polo season to an end. We’ll be back next year to watch Briana as she swims as a senior.

My World ~ Alicante, Spain

In December of 1995, I traveled on business to Alicante, Spain. Alicante is the main city along Spain’s Costa Blanca. I went a couple of days early and visited my friend, Enrique. Earlier, I shared our trip to Guadalest with you. Then we returned to Alicante.

I took this shot of the nearly empty beach out the window of my hotel room. Remember it was December. That beach will be very crowded during the summer months — especially in August.

Later, the full moon rose over the Mediterranean, which transformed the scene as if by magic. Traffic zipped along the highway while the moon shone down on the lazily moving water.

The next morning found me looking out the window at Santa Barbara Castle, which is located on Mount Benacantil. After business was taken care of, it was up the hill to the castle.

From Santa Barbara castle, I looked down on the town and the sailboats in the harbor. It was a beautiful sight.

A slight turn to the right and I could see the hotel and the boat slips across the way. Then it was back down the hill and the work that awaited me there.

It was a very enjoyable visit. Business was good and it was great to see some of my Spanish friends again. If you get the chance to visit Alicante, don’t miss it!
