Nighttime Raider

Opossum — courtesy CT.gov

I didn’t sleep well last night.  Lower back pain was making it nearly impossible to sleep.  I arose from bed around 5 AM and looked out of the window.  A small animal was moving away from the barn.  I reached for my glasses as the critter found shelter in the shadow of the propane tank.

Soon, the little fellow moved out of the shadow.  From the pointed nose to the rat-like tail, I knew it was an opossum.

He searched under the apple tree, where he quickly found his treasure.  With an apple in his mouth, he ran for the shelter of shadow.

All that may explain why I haven’t seen very many apples under the tree.  I don’t mind sharing them the opossum.

  1. They smell awful, have prehistoric teeth, make a nasty hiss when annoyed, and I LOVE them. Don’t know why. Guess I’m naturally attracted to the misfits on the planet.

  2. I volunteered for a place in Boca Raton once upon a time, and one of my duties was to care for Patty, an opossum that had been saved when her mama was hit by a car. Patty was full-grown when I got to know her and as tame as any cat or dog, for sure. The tail on my shoulder always freaked me out a tad when I put her on my shoulders, but I knew she couldn’t help it she had a slimy one. 😉

That was a context thing, I’d never touch a wild one. I would, however, share my apples.
