Source of the Title

Where did I get the title for my previous post on this blog http://secondaryrds.com/dew-dew-dewy-day/?  I had hoped that some of my friends might recognize the reference to a popular song.

Okay, the year was 1927 and that was before our time.  Here’s a link to the song:

Perhaps the questions should be, “How do I know this song?”.  The answer to that goes back to 1954 (approx).  I had a strong mechanical curiosity (I wanted to know how things worked).  I also had a paper route, which meant I had a bit of money in my pocket.

On the way home one day I came across a yard sale.  For the amazing price of $2 I went home with a Victrola like this one.

victrola

What a cherrry-wood beauty it was, but that was not all.  Behind the bottom doors was a collection of 78 rpm records.  Yes, Dew, Dew, Dewy Day was one of them.

I have no recollection of what became of the Victrola or the records that came with it.  A couple of years later, I was bringing home old radios and updating them to 1950s technology.  With that came an interest in short wave radio and later Amateur Radio.  Later, thanks to my older son, my interest moved into computers.

Independence Day

On this day we celebrate our founding fathers’ Declaration of Independence in 1776.  That document did not secure liberty.  That had to be bought in blood through “liberating strife.”  My fifth great grandfather (5 greats), John Hutchinson paid part of that price at Valley Forge as he served under General Washington.

Perhaps that’s why I like this version of America the Beautiful

Enjoy the day and think about what it means.

Saturday Song~ I Have a Father Who Can

Lyrics follow this song.

I Have a Father Who Can!

I cannot make a world and hold it in my hands
I cannot make the lightening flash across the land
I cannot take a piece of clay and mold it into man
but I have a father, I have a father who can.

now he sits high and looks low and guides my feet where ever I go.
when I don't understand I have a father, I have a father who can

I can't make a cloud and ascend it in the ski
I can't love humanity so much that I would dye
I can't even name the stars or count the many grains of sand
I have a father, I have a heavenly father who can

now he sits high and looks low and guides my feet where ever I go.
when I don't understand I have a father, I have a father who can

now he sits high and looks low and guides my feet where ever I go.
when I don't understand I have a father, I have a father
yes I have a father I have a father who can, who can

I Did It! – Monday ~ Music Makers

Sylvia’s father sold band instruments at one time. He could get a tune out of any of them. In later years, he has dropped the others in favor of his favorite accordion. Sylvia has played the guitar since she was in grade school.

Sylvia has an extra guitar that she keeps at his house. On her weekly visits, they set aside plenty of time for their inevitable jam session. Even when they go on vacation, they take along their instruments. Last week they were at the family cottage on Glen Lake (that’s it in the background). Their faces tell the story — they really do enjoy it.

Saturday Song ~ May It Be

The Lord of the Rings trilogy is one of my favorites. That’s true for the print version and the cinematic version. It was difficult to wait until the extended cuts were released on DVD. But I waited and then watched each film in those longer versions for my first viewing.

Enya does a lovely job rendering the song. I hope you like it.
